Top Performance

In order to realize his life long dream of becoming a professional race car driver, Miguel Franco created a training program called Top Performance to compete in the 1997 Northern California Formula Mazda Championship. The project was sponsored by Microlite/Rayovac in Brazil, the leading Brazilian consumer battery manufacturer. It had over 360 participants from the Recife and São Paulo plants, including the CEO and factory workers. After a consulting period to debrief the content and results of previous training programs, Miguel Franco elaborated a project to accomplish three main objectives:

  1. Relate the achievement process back to the office.

  2. Promote self-leadership and teamwork spirit.

  3. Promote life/work balance among the workforce.

The racing proved to be a valuable metaphor for the training, along with Miguel Franco's role as a driver/facilitator. It gave credibility to the program and helped to increase interest and retention of the training material. As a driver, Miguel Franco was able to demonstrate in a competitive environment everything he was facilitating in the training room. Broadcasting a winning spirit, he created a solid bond with key players, inspiring and motivating people to use the program's tools to improve personal and work performance.

After an initial presentation of the objectives to all participants, employees were divided in groups of 50. The groups attended half-day workshops during a seven-month period.

Winning comes from preparation and determination, as well as from consistently putting a team in a position to win. And in order to win a race, a driver must finish it first. Miguel Franco finished all 19 races he started, 50% of them in the top three, with one victory. He also showed how to manage risks and resources to achieve results, and the importance of pacing. As a rookie, he finished the championship in the runner-up position competing against drivers half of his age.

Our current programs evolved from Top Performance and carry the same principles of achievement. The first one is focusing, which most definitely creates a path to the winning circle!
